Protect Your Car From Summer Sun

Protect Your Car From Summer Sun

When we are lucky enough to get a sunny Summer in the UK, it’s time to look forward to barbecues and trips to the beach. Your car, however, most likely dreads it! Read our article to find out more about how to protect your car from summer sun…

Protect Your Car From Summer Sun

We often think of winter as being the enemy of cars with freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and salt all taking their toll on your vehicle. However, the summer sun can also affect your car. Your car paint can quickly bake under a glaring sun and the interior, like a greenhouse, can quickly get to an even higher temperature than outside. Proper care is the best defence against the heat.

Protecting your car’s exterior from sun and warm temperatures

The first thing to do is to make sure you wash your car regularly. Do so in a shady spot and not in direct sunlight. A good wash cleans off the grime. Never use a harsh soap or washing up liquid, use a proper car cleaning product, with a soft cloth. If you have tar or dead bugs stuck on the exterior, special removal products are available. Dry the car off with a soft cloth or towel to prevent water spots from forming.

Next, you should wax your car. Waxing makes a barrier between your paint and the elements. While waxing is a chore, inexpensive buffing machines are available. Once done, it makes it easier to wash the car the next time as it prevents grease and tar from sticking to the paint.

Keeping Convertibles Clean

If you have a convertible, it requires some extra maintenance. Different products are available for canvas or vinyl tops, so check the manufacturer’s directions. The basic steps are simple:

  • Vacuum the top to remove any loose particles
  • Rinse it off with water
  • Apply the cleaning product and gently scrub with a soft bristle brush
  • Thoroughly rinse off the material
  • Blot with an absorbing towel and let it dry. Keep the car out of the sun until then.
  • Apply vinyl or canvas protector and let completely dry.
  • If you have a clear vinyl window in the top, wash it with a suitable specifically designed cleaning product.
